The Sheldon Youth Theatre Arts Director is responsible for implementing, planning, recruiting and directing at least three productions each year and other duties as assigned. This position will make recommendations for additional contracted staff as needed. Some positions may include a music director, choreographer, assistant director, etc. The position is funded through 2027 with an option to renew funding for an additional 2 years.
Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
Recruit and spread the word of this new program throughout Red Wing and surrounding communities.
Identify and work with the executive & artistic director on securing rehearsal space as needed.
Select shows for the program within a specified timeline in coordination with the executive director & artistic director.
Communicate with licensing companies to rent shows as approved by the executive director & artistic director.
Work within designated and approved budgets.
Work with the associate director of marketing & communications of the Sheldon to create all marketing materials for each production.
Work with the associate director community relations & development of the Sheldon to secure sponsorships as well as potential educational outreach presentations to promote the program and shows.
Collaborate with the associate director of production and the tech crew to organize and schedule tech week and set-building, etc.
Conduct effective, efficient and productive rehearsals with students for the productions.
Create a rehearsal schedule to coordinate with school schedules, busing, etc.
Liaise with young people and key adults in participants’ lives (families, teachers)
Comply with safety procedures in place while working with minor children.
Work with the Sheldon staff and the City of Red Wing to put safety measures in place for children such as sign-in/sign-out sheets, contacting guardians when a student is absent, etc.
Adhere to professional standards while respecting the theatre participants and their families and making theatre arts participation rewarding and a positive experience.
Experience Required: Previous experience working in youth theatre. Minimum Education Requirements: Associate degree from an accredited college or university. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Physical:
This position requires work in an office setting using office equipment such as a computer, printer/copier, telephone and other equipment as needed.
There will be some physical work during these duties that may include, but not limited to, lifting (up to 30 pounds), bending, reaching, movement as needed for the productions.
Ability to travel to off-site locations for rehearsals, recruitment, marketing and more

Sheldon Theatre was established in 1904. It has been running continuously since. We have 468 seats and present multi-disciplinary performances and have an in-house community and youth theatre program. The Sheldon Theatre is owned and operated by the City of Red Wing.
Red Wing is a beautiful community of 17,000 people located 40 miles SE of the Twin Cities and along the Mississippi River. It is a vibrant arts community and lots of outdoor recreation. The community is very supportive of the arts and the Sheldon Theatre.
